Recent Developments

Jan 14, 2026 - Faster Growth Projected
  • The US mattress manufacturers industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.74% between 2025 and 2029, faster than the overall economy's anticipated growth, according to an updated forecast from Inforum and the Interindustry Economic Research Fund, Inc. Consumer sentiment is expected to improve in the forecast period, which bodes well for the durable goods manufacturing industries including mattress manufacturers. A factor that may curb consumer spending is substantially higher tariffs on consumer goods, which may be painful for households. The forecast noted that a tighter immigration policy could limit the expansion of the labor supply and job growth for durable goods manufacturing industries. However, labor productivity could still improve due to new technologies such as AI and 3-D printing as well as adjustments forced by the pandemic.
  • The US mattress market saw continued improvement in Q3 2025 year over year, for the total US mattress shipment industry, according to data from the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) in Bed Times Magazine. The Bedding Market Quarterly report showed that total wholesale shipments of mattresses and stationary foundations increased 4.8% in dollar value and declined 6.7% in unit volume year over year, an improvement in the rate of dollar growth and an easing of the unit decline from earlier quarters in 2025. ISPA reported unit shipments for US-produced mattresses declined 5.9% in the third quarter, compared to a 7% decline in the previous quarter. Meanwhile, stationary foundation shipments posted a decline of 8.9% in Q3, an improvement compared to 9.4% in the previous quarter. The report noted that import data from the period is incomplete and will be updated at a later time. The Bedding Market Quarterly reports US sales activity based on data provided by a dozen US mattress manufacturers.
  • According to the BedTimes November 2025 edition, mattress recycling fees will increase in California and Rhode Island in 2026. Rhode Island's $22.50 fee will take effect first on Jan. 1, 2025, followed by California's $18 fee on April 1, 2025. In both states, the increase is a result of higher costs for third-party transportation and operations. All entities selling mattresses and foundations to end users must collect and remit the fee. These include brick-and-mortar retailers, online sellers, and commercial volume sellers (which may include manufacturers). Certain states have enacted mattress recycling laws, and mattress manufacturers must register with the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) in those states.
  • US consumer sentiment modestly improved in January 2026, with the University of Michigan’s preliminary index rising to 54.0 from 52.9 in December, its highest since September, yet still about 25% below year-ago levels, reflecting ongoing concerns about prices and labor markets. Meanwhile, the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell for a fifth straight month in December to 89.1, signaling sustained weak confidence in business conditions and income prospects. For the mattress manufacturing industry, subdued confidence and guarded sentiment suggest consumers may defer or reduce discretionary spending on big-ticket purchases like mattresses. Persistent cost concerns and labor-market unease could weigh on demand, pressuring manufacturers and dealers to adjust pricing, promotions, and inventory strategies to align with cautious buyers.
