Recent Developments

Nov 17, 2025 - Manufacturers Share 2026 Equipment Trends
  • Turf Magazine recently spoke with several manufacturers of commercial landscaping equipment to learn about the top trends in the industry in 2026. Designing equipment to be easier to service in the field reduces equipment and labor downtime. New features include tool-less air filter changing, transparent fuel tanks, and QR codes on equipment that link to service guides. As battery-powered equipment continues to gain ground, manufacturers are introducing batteries that are interchangeable across equipment categories and trailer-mounted charging hubs that can operate both in the field and during overnight charging. Equipment makers are also introducing more autonomous robotic mowers that enable larger jobs and overnight mowing.
  • Tepid pending home sales could signal weaker demand for residential landscaping services. Pending home sales were flat in September compared to August and were down 0.9% year-over-year, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun said, "Contract signings matched the second-strongest pace of the year. However, signings have yet to fully reach the level needed for a healthy market despite mortgage rates reaching a one-year low. A record-high stock market and growing housing wealth in September were not enough to offset a likely softening job market."
  • US outdoor power equipment (OPE) dealers saw same-store sales drop by 2% in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, according to Constellation Dealer Services. While OPE sales typically taper off in the fall following the busy spring and summer seasons, the September drop in 2025 was sharper than those in 2024 and 2023. Regionally, the Midwest posted the strongest OPE sales in September, with a 7% rise, marking the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The South saw sales increase by 1%, and Northeast OPE sales dropped 2%. The West region continued its slump with a 10% decline in OPE sales, marking the sixth consecutive month of negative or flat growth.
  • Battery-powered walk-behind electric mowers on the higher end of the pricing spectrum gained market share in the spring 2025 buying season, according to recent data from market research firm OpenBrand. In May 2025, battery-powered walk-behind mowers priced $501 and higher accounted for nearly a third of category sales compared to just over 25% the same month in 2024. Most of the increase came at the expense of battery-powered walk-behind mowers priced between $401-$500. OpenBrand suggested that the top pricing tier growth could mean consumers are trading up for more expensive equipment, or that retailers are increasing prices to reflect higher costs. Battery-powered walk-behind mowers priced $350 or less have the largest share of the category with 39% of the market. Gasoline-powered mowers are still the largest walk-behind category by a significant margin.
