• AI chatbots have become a first stop for emotional support for a growing number of teenagers, according to research published by Brown University. Roughly 1 in 8 adolescents have turned to AI chatbots for help with their mental health. Experts say that many teens are using the technology because they perceive it as being more accessible and designed to validate emotions. Most teens use chatbots without telling anyone, according to Brown University researcher Ateev Mehrotra.
• Federal authorities say that they have launched the largest health care fraud crackdown in US history, and mental health practitioners are among those targeted by the effort. Prosecutors in Texas, for example, said that a Houston-area operation billed more than $16 million to Texas Medicaid for mental health services that often were not provided or were not provided by properly licensed professionals. The US Justice Department said that 455 defendants are accused of schemes involving more than $6.5 billion in false claims tied to taxpayer-funded programs.
• Enrollment in Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans through Healthcare.gov has modestly decreased, according to the Washington Post. The ACA resulted in an extraordinary expansion of mental health and substance use disorder coverage, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. About 20 million people gained insurance coverage because of the ACA, including 15.3 million who became eligible for Medicaid. • Mental health industry employment increased moderately and average wages for nonsupervisory employees decreased slightly during the first seven months of 2026, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. US mental health industry sales are forecast to grow at a 5.72% compounded annual rate from 2026 to 2030, faster than the growth of the overall economy, according to Inforum and the Interindustry Economic Research Fund, Inc.
